Flamingo Costume – want to see how to make one? It’s so easy!
It’s adorable, right? Great to make for kids too. Switch out the feather colors to make an ostrich instead! Or, go as a couple and be a flamingo and ostrich! You can even put fake “legs” on the skirt to look like you are riding it. Many ways to make this costume work.
If you’re short on time, watch this 1 minute video which summarizes how to make a Flamingo Costume.
Materials
- Feather boas – 8 (6 for skirt and 2 for neck/head)
- Styrofoam ball
- Elastic waist band or tutu
- Wooden stick
- Black felt (I show pink above but it should be black!)
- Google eyes
- Foam visor
- Pipecleaners (2 black)
- Yellow or gold felt or foam paper (I ended up using gold)
- Glue Gun and glue sticks
Directions
Make Skirt
Cut 6 boas in half lengthwise to make 12 half boas.
Loop through elastic waistband to make skirt.
Beak
Fold over and glue foam visor. Cut black felt piece and glue onto visor making the beak curve. The curve is hard. Play with it until you get the look you want.
Add yellow or gold layer to beak.
Glue onto styrofoam ball.
Head
Glue eyes onto the ball and attach black pipe cleaners for eyelashes. Attach light wooden stick (make sure long enough to hold head away from you).
Glue part of a boa onto head (wrap around head like mummy but be careful not to hide the eyes.)
Neck
Attach two full-length boas to skirt. Then attach to head.
The beak is the hardest part. It’s important to get it to curve, which I didn’t do a good job of on this one.
You will stand out and be the life of the party with this whimsical and gorgeous flamingo costume! Let me know if you decide to make one. I’d be thrilled!
